We have been privileged to be involved in an array of impressive and ground-breaking projects, proudly delivering multidiscipline services at the highest standard. This quality is acknowledged by our clients who chose to regularly re-engage EnerMech EPS on new projects.
Our success in delivering excellence on projects of all scales is contingent on solid Project Management by highly skilled and experienced engineers. We spoke to Senior Project Engineer David Bourke at EnerMech EPS HQ in Sydney about the rewarding work behind our greatest project achievements.
So, David, what duties are involved in a typical day of Project Management?
“Managing and leading the project team, and defining the priority scopes to achieve project completion in the most efficient manner possible; Co-ordination of the vendors and contractors engaged in project work; Managing engineering, construction & commissioning activities; Technical query and issue resolution.
The time spent on activities changes in each project stage, in specification and procurement stages there is often a focus on technical query resolution.
In Construction and Commissioning activities, the focus shifts to coordinating and streamlining the project team, vendors’ and contractors’ priorities for overall project completion.”
How did you get into Project Management at EPS?
“Having a background from early in my career of project leadership and engineering, my roles have always involved a large component of project management. In the past number of years, I have been in leading project engineer roles on various major Oil and Gas projects. Knowing the ambition and growth of EnerMech EPS within this industry attracted me to apply for a senior project engineering and project management role with the organisation.”
What are the challenges of managing large scale projects in the oil, gas and resources sectors?
“The main project challenges are always to complete the job safely, within budget and schedule.
Challenges such as remote location, technical complexity and environmental extremes are frequent, which must be overcome in the delivery of oil & gas projects.”
What are some of the typical project objectives EnerMech EPS is contracted to deliver for clients?
“The big ones tend to be zero harm to people or the environment; to deliver project within budget and schedule; delivering a fully traceable, auditable and technically compliant installation.”
What kinds of management systems does EnerMech EPS employ to meet client objectives?
“EnerMech EPS uses a number of management plans and completion systems to meet and exceed client objectives. Plans include project execution plan, project quality plan and project completions and commissioning plan. The plans and completions systems promote continual improvement strategies such as external and internal audits, client reviews and KPI tracking.”
What are the skills and qualifications required to be a competent Project Manager in the industry?
“Good organisational, communication and risk management skills are critical to become a competent Project Manager. The background qualifications of Project Managers vary; in the Oil & Gas and Power industries a qualification in engineering is always a good basis as it gives the manager a good technical understanding of the project.”
What would you consider some of your greatest project achievements?
Recently I held a leading project role in the commissioning of 3 x 180TJ upstream gas compression facilities, the commissioning was executed without harm to people or the environment giving both myself and the entire project team satisfaction on a job well done.”
Thanks to David for his insights into this vital aspect of Power, Oil & Gas, Resources and Infrastructure projects and the work we do for our clients.
